Jyväskylä Dance Institute, together with Multicultural Center Gloria, is organizing two free dance courses for immigrant children from 2.9.–2.12. ✨
Course 1: Family dance / 2–5 years old together with an adult
Wednesdays 14:15-15:00
Course 2: Creative dance expression / 6–9 years old alone without an adult
Wednesdays 15-15:45
The lessons are in Finnish and English. Families where one parent is Finnish are also welcome.
Location: Jyväskylä Dance Institute, Vapaudenkatu 48–50 (ground floor)
Teacher: Kirsi Nuutinen. Kirsi is a trained dance teacher who specializes in early childhood dance education.

Goals of the dance classes:
Dance classes create a space for safe presence, play and creativity. Dance classes offer participants the opportunity to get to know dance, strengthen their own self-image through their bodies, participate, be present and belong to a group.
The goal is to increase the experience of inclusion and thus prevent exclusion. In the group, children and adults can enjoy dancing, express themselves through dance and strengthen their body awareness through movement. The aim is to increase both the physical and mental well-being of the participants. Family dance classes also support interaction between parent and child.
About the content:
In a family dance class, the dance is started with a strong use of imagery. Pictures, objects (e.g. soft toys) and other aids are used. The class includes short guided dance sequences and task-based exercises. Both children and adults move during the class. Music is a strong part of the dance class and the teacher is happy to accept musical requests.
In the Creative Dance Expression class, the dance is done with task-based dances (i.e. the dance is started with simple instructions, e.g. moving at a low/medium level and a high level and then varying it) and lesson series are built. Ideas for the content of the dance class (music, genre) are welcome.
